The Rangers have made an upgrade to their defense.
New York has traded defenseman Neal Pionk and the 20th pick in the 2019 draft to Winnipeg for Jacob Trouba, the team announced Monday.

Trouba, 25, had spent all six seasons of his career with the Jets and could improve New York’s back line considerably.
The defenseman tallied eight goals and 42 assists for Winnipeg this past season and skated in all 82 games.
Trouba was tied for ninth among all defensemen in assists in 2018-19. Only 13 defenseman totaled 50 or more points last season.
The Rangers gave up the ninth-most goals (267) in 2018-19 and finished the year with a 32-36-14 record — leaving them outside of the playoff picture.
New York has missed the postseason in two consecutive seasons.
